[This was recently in an exhibit for paintings w an associated poem. The final lines were taken from a rather surly ex-wife poem, while the painting, despite the horse, is about something more universal. Hence, new poem for the occasion.]:
A Confrontation
You,
facing grotesque
seemingly arbitrary fate
may fail to recognize
how well it suits you.
Please do not libel God
with claims of innocence,
accusations of cruelty.
You've known this was coming;
only the beauty
is unexpected
and the clarity
for how will you know who you are
til justice arrives
on a red horse
to break your
perfect vanity?
When will you know
who you are?

Well in my experience, Forrest, yes and no. Quakers are very diverse; I've
known a few who seemed to me pretty acquisitive.
More significant, I've always wonder why William Blake, most of whose values seemed to me very close to Quakers', with one exception. He hated the Industrial Revolution (he called them the satanic mills). Like globalization it impoverished thousands of the poor.
Quaker economic values like the Industrial Revolution and globalization has contraries.
Forrest, thanking you for your long and arduous stewardship of the Quaker Bible Study, I have made an attempt to maintain some continuity. Again, thank you, ole buddy!
